Overview
Carter Sullivan Ltd was contracted to install a new building generator and IT room UPS, including distribution infrastructure for a major UPS manufacturer.
The project included the installation of:
- 60kVA Generator
- 15kVA UPS
- External Maintenance Bypass Switch
- AMF Panel
Along with the installation we were asked to manage the delivery and positioning of both the UPS and generator.
In Detail
The UPS was to be located in the ground floor IT room which due to the physical size didn’t allow for preparatory works. The size also posed delivery issues as cables crossed the delivery route on frequent occasions.
Working closely with the end user we designed our project plan to ensure minimal disruption to the business, all works were programmed for a weekend.
Prior to the shutdown weekend our team attended site and performed detailed site surveys which included:
- Full electrical site survey
- Logistic site survey
- Pre project site meetings
By attending site prior to the shutdown weekend to perform detailed surveys we were able to ensure that the necessary power down, to perform the final generator and UPS connections, would be kept to the very minimum.
The weekend of the installation our team arrived on site early and performed final run through of all the proposed works.
Prior to the power down, programmed for the Sunday, our team performed preparation works which included:
- Delivery and positioning of UPS
- Delivery and positioning of generator
- Installation of cable management systems
- Installation of main generator cabling
- Installation of new three phase switchgear
- Installation of new generator AMF panel
On completion of all the above works permission was sought from the end user and the power was disconnected from the entire building, this was to allow connection to the main 400VAC BUS BAR.
During the shutdown the team:
- Connected the new generator feed
- Connected the new UPS feed
- Performed tests in accordance with the 16th Edition Regulations
Once all the connections had been checked and all the required tests had been performed the power was retuned to the building.
Tests were performed on the generator and UPS infrastructure. Once the team were satisfied that the installation was secure it was handed over to the generator and UPS engineers to perform the final commissioning.
The project was managed by our installation team and was delivered as per the project plan, meeting specification and time constraints.
