Overview
Carter Sullivan Ltd was contracted to install a new UPS and distribution infrastructure for a client working directly with the NHS in London.
The project included the installation of:
- 40kVA 9355 UPS
- External Maintenance Bypass Switch
- New 18 Way Distribution Board
- 14 New UPS Fed 16A Commando Sockets
- 10 New UPS Fed 13A Standard Sockets
Along with the UPS we were asked to design our installation to allow for the future inclusion of a standby generator.
In Detail
The UPS was to be located in the basement IT room which unfortunately suffered from occasional flooding. To ensure that any future floods would not affect the business we placed the UPS on a 25cm plinth.
Working closely with the end user we designed our project plan to ensure minimal disruption to the business, all shutdown works were programmed for a weekend.
Prior to the shutdown weekend our team attended site and performed preparation works including:
- Delivery and positioning of UPS
- Installation of cable management systems
- Installation of new three phase switchgear
- Installation of new power outlets
By attending site prior to the shutdown weekend we were able to ensure that the necessary power down, to perform the final UPS connections, would be kept to the very minimum.
On the final shutdown weekend our team arrived on site early to perform all the final works required to allow a swift switchover to UPS.
Once permission was sought from the end user the power was disconnected from the entire building, this was to allow connection to the main 400VAC BUS BAR.
During the shutdown the team:
- Connected the new UPS feed to the BUS BAR
- Performed tests in accordance with the 16th Edition Regulations
Whilst the power was disconnected our team took the opportunity to perform routine maintenance on the client’s switchgear and distribution boards.
Once all the connections had been checked and all the required tests had been performed the power was retuned to the building.
Tests were performed on the sockets and UPS infrastructure. Once the team were satisfied that the installation was secure it was handed over to the UPS engineer to perform the final commissioning.
The project was managed by our installation team and was delivered as per the project plan, meeting specification and time constraints.
