NEW SMART UPS INTERLOCK EMBS
April 23rd 2013

Carter Sullivan has launched its revolutionary Smart Interlock EMBS to enable anyone to safely and confidently operate the transfer of a UPS system onto Maintenance Bypass, without fear of losing the load or damaging the UPS.

Most External Maintenance Bypass Switches (EMBS) today incorporate some form of interlocking to ensure the UPS is in the correct mode before switching is performed. However, most of these interlocks require the user to understand the switching sequence in detail prior to its operation and, in many cases, EMBS also require keys that always seem to go missing when needed most!

The Smart Interlock incorporates an LCD Display and simple push button controls that guide the operator through the process of transferring a UPS system onto Maintenance Bypass. The clear instructions and UPS automation provide a safe and straightforward way to operate the system.

John Slaughter, Carter Sullivan’s Technical Director, designed the Smart Interlock switch after helping a nervous customer through the existing bypass procedure. The customer had both his operating manual and key but found the process complex and confusing. John decided to design a switch that could guide the user through the process. He explains,

“An EMBS is often only used in the event of a UPS problem and hunting down keys and searching through manuals can be challenging and result in unnecessary delay. The switch is designed to constantly communicate with the UPS as it moves through the process, ensuring the UPS is in the correct operating mode before proceeding to the next step.”

The Smart Interlock switch will automatically transfer the UPS to static bypass when necessary and wait for feedback from the UPS before allowing the operator to continue with the process, making incorrect operation impossible. It monitors the state of the mains supply and UPS output to provide additional security when operating the bypass switch. This is achieved by the addition of a purpose-built dual power supply, which ensures the PLC has continuous power regardless of the condition of the mains supply or UPS output. The Manual Bypass Breaker is protected to ensure it cannot be operated at the wrong point in the switching sequence.

Other features include:

The option for the switch to be pass-code protected
The ability to interface with multiple UPS systems in a parallel configuration
Individual company names and contact details can be programmed on the display
The facility to interlock with most major UPS, including Eaton, Riello and Emerson

Innovation when it matters most
February 28th 2013

As a business owner, you will be all too aware of the risks associated with a workplace fire. Not only can it devastate your premises, equipment and employee wellbeing, a fire in the workplace has the potential to damage your long-term business prospects.

A fire in your server room or in your UPS system can pose extreme challenges to the fire services, especially if it is installed without the ability to externally isolate it from the mains supply. UPS by design will continue to provide power unless shutdown correctly, which in most cases is a manual function using the controls on the UPS itself. Without an external isolation system in place, the risks to the fire services are dramatically increased. With no way to disconnect the UPS from the mains supply, fire fighters face an increasingly dangerous situation.

At Carter Sullivan, we support clients by providing specialist UPS engineering solutions. With over twenty years experience of installing UPS systems, we understand how important it is to consider and prevent such challenging situations. We have witnessed these scenarios and have assisted customers to design and install isolation systems that can be operated outside the server room. To remove the challenges posed by this situation, we have developed a remote emergency power off (EPO) station. This system enables the end user to isolate a UPS system from a remote location. The system works by tripping the battery breaker and the mains power supply at the same time, which switches off the required UPS.

Additionally, we can install a key switch safety feature alongside the isolation button to remove the risk of a UPS being isolated accidentally. To achieve full isolation, the key switch and push button have been designed so the user must operate both at the same time. The EPO unit can also be fitted with a fault warning light to indicate if a UPS has gone into fault mode. The light ensures any fault condition can be responded to extremely quickly, reducing the risk of recurrence.

Should the worst happen, fire crews can operate as quickly and efficiently as possible to mitigate any potential damage. By installing these effective solutions, the risk to your business is significantly reduced.
