Capita – Factory UPS Protection

09th August 2018
Capita using a UPS system

Our client Capita, a major business process outsourcing & professional services company, wanted to protect their entire factory floor, including the air conditioning and machinery from power problems. An outage that stopped production would result in significant financial loss and penalties, so USP protection was critical.

Carter Sullivan installed a 400kW UPS and 750kVA Generator in May 2017. These systems had to be large & resilient enough to cope with mechanical loads which can prove problematic for standard UPS systems.

OUR CHALLENGES

The client’s factory environment was not ideal for a UPS system. Electrical equipment in these industrial settings are subject to several challenges, such as moisture, dust and temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, the generator had to be located on an area of uneven grass and cable runs were long.

As such, a highly resilient UPS and a generator was required with all processes carried out with health and safety in front of mind.

THE PROJECT

Carter Sullivan proposed a Riello Master HP 400kVA industrial UPS with 5 minutes battery to power the main LV switchboard for the whole site. We also sourced a used FG Wilson 750kVA standby generator and fuel tank, which we positioned on a concrete plinth on the outside grassed area.

Other special features included the installation of flexible pipework for the generator, due to an uneven surface and large ATS & UPS bypass switches to handle the size of loads.

Our AC install team for the UPS and generator worked on-site for two weeks. The DC team for the battery build and a delivery team to position the generator were also utilised.

OUR HIGHLIGHTS

An immediate benefit to the client was the ability to run the site on a generator to continue operations during the upcoming busy period. Long-term benefits included improved efficiency and resilient power protection.

“This job presented challenges because a lot of the cables were very large and had to be routed through tight ducts around the site. We also had to position and build the UPS on a working factory floor.” – Carter Sullivan Stakeholder

The client was delighted that we delivered this project to budget within four weeks.
